Background of the study
This study explores how different interpreting strategies influence the clarity of Igbo language political discourse in Enugu. Political discourse often involves complex and rapidly delivered messages that require interpreters to accurately convey the speaker’s intent while managing cultural nuances (Nwachukwu, 2023). In Enugu, where Igbo is a primary language in political communication, interpreters employ various strategies such as consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation to facilitate dialogue between politicians and the public. This study examines how these methods affect the clarity, accuracy, and audience comprehension of political messages. Data are collected through observations of live political events, interviews with interpreters, and audience surveys. The research aims to identify best practices for interpreter-mediated political discourse and to assess the effectiveness of different strategies in managing complex political terminology and cultural references. The findings will offer insights for training programs and policy reforms aimed at enhancing the quality of political communication in Igbo, thereby strengthening democratic processes (Nwachukwu, 2023).

Statement of the problem
In Enugu, the clarity of Igbo political discourse is often compromised by challenges inherent in interpretation. Misinterpretations, delays, and cultural mismatches occur when interpreters are unable to effectively manage the rapid pace and complexity of political language (Nwachukwu, 2023). The lack of standardized interpreting strategies and insufficient training further exacerbate these issues, leading to misunderstandings that may affect political outcomes. This study seeks to identify the key factors that hinder clear interpretation in political settings and evaluate how specific interpreting strategies can improve message delivery and audience understanding in Igbo political discourse.

Objectives of the study:

To examine the impact of different interpreting strategies on political discourse clarity.

To identify factors that hinder effective Igbo interpretation in political contexts.

To recommend strategies for enhancing interpreter performance.

Research questions:

What interpreting strategies are used in Igbo political discourse?

How do these strategies affect clarity and accuracy?

What improvements can be made to interpreter training and techniques?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into improving the clarity of Igbo political discourse through enhanced interpreting strategies. The findings will assist policymakers, interpreter trainers, and political communicators in promoting effective and culturally sensitive political communication in Enugu (Nwachukwu, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing interpreting strategies in Igbo political discourse in Enugu, focusing on live events and interviews without extending to other political contexts.

Definitions of terms:

Interpreting strategies: Techniques used by interpreters to convey spoken messages accurately.

Political discourse: Communication related to political issues and debates.

Clarity: The quality of being easily understood.
